Let’s be honest – finding the right job opportunity is hard work.
Today’s job hunt is about more than just posting résumés and calling a few work contacts. Finding your dream job involves a combination of leveraging employment opportunities through a staffing service like UNITEMP, networking with second and third generation decision makers, and good old-fashioned hard work.
But like most things in life, the more time and effort you put into your job search, the greater your chances of success. So as you start the New Year, get organized, get down to business and make finding a job a full-time job:
- Determine what type of job you really need to continue your career development and set some short- and long-term goals to get you where you want to be. Let these goals drive a prioritized to-do list, broken into manageable, productive job-search tasks. You’ll be much less vulnerable to distractions if you stick to this list and track goal attainment.
- Devote time to job-search activities in proportion to their importance. Blanketing potential employers with digital résumés rarely produces results proportionate to the effort expended – so manage time spent on this activity carefully. While it may be easier than interviewing with a recruiter, or face-to-face networking, it’s not the most productive use of your time.
- Establish a daily routine that simulates a work day. Get up early, exercise (if that’s your routine), shower and get dressed. You don’t need to don a suit, but dress nicely enough to make yourself feel both positive and productive. Take a look at your prioritized to-do list, establish a game plan for the day and tackle your highest priority tasks first. Before you end your job-hunting day, plan out the next.
- Schedule informational interviews. While they may not lead to immediate job offers, this low-stress form of networking can be a high-yield career development tool.
- Work with UNITEMP. When you work with UNITEMP, you have access to temporary and contract opportunities with leading employers throughout Northern New Jersey– many of which are not advertised elsewhere and may lead to direct employment. If you haven’t already registered with us, you can get started right now by contacting a staffing specialist. And if you are currently registered, remember these quick tips to maximize the value we provide:
Send your updated résumé to UNITEMP. Have you gained new skills, experience or responsibilities since you first sent us your résumé? If so, please let us know so that we can update your profile and consider you for additional opportunities.
Search all of UNITEMP’s open jobs periodically. Set-up a regular reminder in Outlook, on your mobile phone, or in any other scheduling software you use. We receive new openings daily and update our job board frequently.
Finally, remember the reasons that you should choose temporary work over unemployment. UNITEMP can help you keep your skills sharp, keep your morale high and open the door for direct employment opportunities.

If you’ve ever been on an interview, you’ve probably heard this one:
“Tell me a little bit about yourself.”
Sounds innocuous enough, but in reality this is an extremely important question. Interviewers ask it for a number of reasons:
- to get a sense of what you feel is most important about yourself;
- to see how well you’ve prepared for the interview;
- to find out why you think you’re the best candidate for the job;
- to see how you handle yourself in an unstructured situation;
- to see how articulate you are;
- to find out what type of first impression you make.
There is a lot riding on your response to this question, so make sure you knock it out of the park. Here are a few quick tips for answering the “tell me about yourself” interview question the right way:
- Be brief. Keep the answer short – no more than two to three minutes.
- Develop and include your USP. Your Unique Selling Proposition, also known as a personal branding statement, is a one-sentence description of who you are, what you greatest strength is and the major benefit that a potential employer will derive from this strength. Plenty of help for developing your USP is available online.
- Practice, practice, practice. Write your answer out, then rehearse it until it’s second nature. The better you know your pitch, the more poised and confident you’ll sound.
- Cite examples. When you develop your answer, include one or two examples that best demonstrate why you’re well-qualified for the available postition, or highlight your most important accomplishments.
- Stay focused. When an interviewer asks you about yourself, he or she doesn’t necessarily want to know where you were born, what your hobbies are or a laundry list of your job skills. Make sure your response clearly focuses on the experiences and accomplishments most relevant to the available position.
The “tell me about yourself” interview question offers a great opportunity to set yourself apart from your job competitors. So don’t waste it. Take advantage of your time in the driver’s seat by selling yourself, creating a great first impression and setting a positive tone for the rest of the interview.
While you’re searching for a direct job, temporary employment with UNITEMP is a great option – offering flexibility, a regular paycheck, benefits and a chance to get a foot-in-the-door with leading New Jersey employers. Contact us today or Search UNITEMP Temporary Jobs online.

When it comes to finding rewarding employment, knowledge is power.
Whether you’re ready to contact a recruiter, want to speed up your job search, or are merely evaluating the flexible work options a staffing firm can provide, you need to begin the process by educating yourself. Why? Because if you understand our industry well, you’ll be better prepared to take full advantage of the resources and placement options we offer – and ultimately find that ideal work opportunity.
To get you started on the “path of enlightenment,” here is a list of common staffing terms (compliments of the American Staffing Association), as well as an overview of the occupational categories in the staffing industry:
Placement – A staffing firm brings together job seekers and potential employers for the purpose of establishing a “permanent” employment relationship.
Temporary Help – (also known as “contingent” or “on-time” help) A staffing firm hires its own employees and assigns them to support or supplement a client’s work force in situations involving employee absences, temporary skill shortages, seasonal workloads and special projects.
Temporary-to-Hire – (also known as “temp-to-hire” or “temp-to-direct hire”) A staffing firm employee works for a client during a trial period in which both the employee and the client consider establishing a “permanent” employment relationship. At the end of the trial period the assignment may end, or the client may extend an offer for employment.
Long-Term Staffing – (also known as “contract” staffing) A staffing firm supplies employees to work on long-term assignments or discrete projects. Employees are recruited, screened and assigned by the staffing firm.
Recruiter - A recruiter is a person within a staffing firm who is responsible for identifying and screening/evaluating qualified candidates for an open position within a client business. The recruiter generally works closely with the hiring firm to determine which candidates are best suited for any open positions.
Typical Occupational Categories in the Staffing Industry
Health Care
Physicians, dentists, nurses, hygienists, medical technicians, therapists, home health aides, custodial care workers, etc.
Industrial
Manual laborers, food handlers, cleaners, assemblers, drivers, tradesmen, machine operators, maintenance workers, etc.
Information Technology
Consultants, analysts, programmers, designers, installers, and other occupations involving computer sciences (hardware or software) or communications technology (Internet, telephone, etc.).
Office–Clerical
Secretaries, general office clerks, receptionists, administrative assistants, word-processing and data entry operators, cashiers, etc.
Professional–Managerial
Accountants, bookkeepers, attorneys, paralegals, middle and senior managers, advertising and marketing executives, and other nontechnical occupations that require higher skill or education levels.
Technical
Engineers, scientists, laboratory technicians, architects, draftsmen, technical writers and illustrators, and other individuals with special skills or training in technical fields involving math or science (not including information technology).

Looking for work? Then you know that it’s tough out there.
But fortunately, you don’t have to conduct your job search alone. Staffing specialists are committed to your success and can facilitate your job search in a number of ways:
- Career guidance. Re-entering the workforce? Just out of college? Laid off? If you fall into one of these categories, you may be unsure of exactly how to best use your talents. A staffing professional can help you critically examine your skills, training and experience to identify the right opportunities for you.
- Access to unadvertised opportunities. When working with a staffing service, many businesses do not advertise through traditional means. They trust staffing specialists to quickly identify the right individuals for their temporary, temp-to-hire or contract needs. As a result, many great job opportunities are available exclusively through the staffing firm.
- Résumé and interview skill feedback. As an employment expert, a staffing professional can help you polish your résumé and build your interviewing confidence so that you can land the job you want.
- Keep your morale up. Being out of work can take a toll on you – emotionally and financially. A staffing specialist can provide interim contract and temporary employment opportunities to help you:
- Earn money while you search for direct employment;
- Keep your schedule flexible so you can continue your job search;
- Network with new co-workers to uncover additional employment leads;
- Keep your job skills sharp and up-to-date;
- Avoid gaps on your résumé;
- Stay positive and productive.
You’re More Than Just an “Applicant”
At UNITEMP, you’re more than just a résumé, a certification, or a set of skills. You’re a critical component of our success. Our staffing specialists want to help you achieve your goals, by matching you with an opportunity that suits your skills, needs and interests. Contact us today to learn more about temporary, temp-to-hire and contract employment opportunities for New Jersey job seekers.

Everybody makes mitsakes (oops, that should read “mistakes”).
But while a blog typo may be easily forgiven, other mistakes on the job can have serious consequences – for you, your boss, or even the company as a whole. And frankly, the way you handle your slip-up can be just as critical as the mistake itself.
So what should you do when you make an error at work?
- Assess the situation. As soon as you realize your misstep, take a minute to consider the ramifications, as well as whether or not you can correct the mistake yourself. If you can solve it, do so immediately; but if not, take a moment to brainstorm possible solutions. This way, when you approach your boss you’ll appear proactive and responsible.
- Own up to it. Never try to cover up your mistake. If a boss finds out later that you hid a problem, it can permanently damage your credibility. So take the initiative and bring the situation to your supervisor’s attention. When you’re honest from the outset, your boss won’t feel the need to underscore the situation’s importance to you.
- Take responsibility. Don’t make excuses, act defensively or place blame elsewhere. Negative reactions like these will cause equally negative reactions from your boss. Instead, use your mistake as an opportunity to step up to the plate and demonstrate your responsibility and problem-solving abilities. If someone else is involved in the mistake, encourage him or her to follow your lead and do the right thing.
- Explain what happened and what you plan to do about it. Once you’ve acknowledged your misstep and apologized, you must present a plan for correcting it. You can say something like, “I’ve made a mistake and I apologize for the error. I’ve come up with some possible solutions and would like your feedback on how to best resolve the situation.” It’s fine to ask for help developing and implementing your solution – the key here is to not simply ask for your boss to bail you out.
- Demonstrate that you’ve learned from your mistake. When a mistake occurs on the job, it’s not enough to just solve it and move on. Once you’ve resolved the problem, you need to determine what caused it in the first place – and discuss your plan to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Explaining to your boss what you’ve learned from your mistake demonstrates that you’re conscientious and have the organization’s best interest in mind.
You’re human. You’ll make mistakes from time-to-time (we all do). And if you handle a mistake at work correctly, you can turn a difficult situation into a learning experience – an experience that actually provides an opportunity to demonstrate your honesty, integrity and problem-solving ability.

Recently downsized or laid off? New to the workforce? Looking to earn extra cash? Trying to break into a new field?
Consider working as a temporary. Today’s staffing firms employee millions of individuals in virtually all fields of work, from day labor to executive, and offer a variety of advantages:
- Flexible work options. Work when and where you want to work. You can work only during school hours, take the summers off, or take an extended break. As a temporary employee, you have the freedom to accept assignments that work with your schedule.
- Employee benefits. In addition to a paycheck, many temporary staffing agencies provide benefits to their workers. These benefits typically include vacation pay, sick pay, access to medical insurance and a 401(k) plan, and are available to employees who fulfill certain employment requirements. Be sure to inquire what benefits are offered when you apply or interview.
- Opportunities for direct employment. Temporary assignments allow you to get a foot in the door with an employer. If an employer is impressed with your skills, work ethic and job performance, he can work with the staffing firm to offer you direct employment.
- Gain experience. If you’re a recent graduate, re-entering the workforce, or would like to make a career transition, working as a temporary can help you gain valuable on-the-job experience. In addition, many staffing firms offer free training to build or enhance your skill set.
- Variety. If you enjoy new experiences or are unsure about your career path, temporary work can provide the variety you need. You can test out different jobs, companies and industries – without long-term commitment – and find out where you fit best.
Ready to take the next step?
Join the UNITEMP team. We’ll provide you with a rewarding temporary assignment that offers the variety, flexibility, benefits and job experience you need.

If you’ve recently fallen victim to downsizing or or a layoff, you may be tempted to file for unemployment benefits. But in my opinion, temporary work is a much better option. Here’s why:
- Keep your skills sharp. If you don’t use it, you lose it. No matter what field you work in – administrative, technical, professional or industrial - temporary work helps keep you in-touch and on-top of your game.
- Keep your morale high. In today’s job market, it’s taking nearly twice as long as normal to find work. When you sign up with UNITEMP, we can get you back to work quickly. And when you’re working, you’re more likely to have a positive outlook on your situation.
- Get your foot in the door. In many cases, our temporary employees are eventually hired by our client companies. If you want to work for a particular company, a temporary assignment is a great way to make internal contacts and get your foot in the door.
- Try out a new career. Ever wanted to try a different type of work? Now is the perfect time. Temporary assignments give you the freedom to work in a variety of positions and industries – to find the perfect new career fit for you.
Bottom line, choosing temporary work over unemployment is a smart move. Over the years, I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met who have changed careers, improved their lives, become independent, and made more money in the long run than they expected to by working as temporary employees. I even know some who transitioned into full time jobs, found business partners, made great contacts, and actually met the person they married by accepting temporary work over unemployment.
As far as I know temporary work does not interfere with unemployment. Yes, you have to work for your money. But in most cases I’ve seen, the unemployment benefits are extended if the work stops. And, worst-case scenario, one of the good things I mentioned earlier happens while you’re on assignment. So what do you have to lose? Contact UNITEMP today or search our office/clerical, technical and professional opportunities.

Have you ever noticed that some people always seem to end up climbing the career ladder faster than everyone else? While it could be because Mom or Dad is the boss, more than likely it’s because they work hard and follow these five tips:
- Always display a positive attitude.
Your attitude can be a powerful self-fulfilling prophecy. If you have a negative attitude, 9 times out of 10 you will fail. But, if you bring a positive attitude and display confidence, strength, and determination, you WILL be successful.
- Stay educated.
The best way to ensure success is to stay one step ahead. Research your industry. Know what’s happening and what the experts say will happen. Look for trends. When you find them, start to train yourself in these areas. Knowledge is power.
- Create a personal elevator pitch.
First impressions mean a lot. If you only had 30 seconds to convince someone you were a hard-worker and a leader, what would you say and do? Plan this ahead of time; you never know when it will be needed.
- Learn to network.
Unfortunately sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know (at least to begin with). Learn to network. You can even network within your own company. Invite co-workers to lunch. Take the time to walk by someone’s office to say hello. And actively seek out opportunities to network outside of work by joining organizations, groups, etc. You start by seeking out your local chamber of commerce to learn of upcoming events.
- Be open to new opportunities.
Read trade publications. Listen to people in your network. When a new opportunity presents itself, don’t sit back and wait. Take the initiative to inquire more–and don’t be shy!
And speaking of new opportunities, if you’re in the market for a new job or just curious about what is out there, please call us today. As a leading New Jersey staffing service, we offer a variety of excellent employment opportunities.

Looking for ways to earn a raise or promotion?
Get on your boss’s A-List. If you consistently show your boss that you’re doing a great job, you’ll progress further, faster. Here are a few quick tips to get you noticed, separate yourself from the pack and create a lasting positive impression:
- Communicate clearly. When in doubt, err on the side of clarity and ask questions when things are unclear. Provide your boss with regular updates about your projects and plans. But be careful not to go overboard – ask him directly if you’re providing enough information or too much.
- Honor your commitments. Underpromise and overdeliver. Don’t shy away from new challenges, but make reasonably sure you can hit an objective before taking on the additional responsibility.
- Know what makes your boss tick. Learn your boss’s pet peeves – and avoid them. Find out what his priorities are – and incorporate them into your own (e.g., if your boss is a “numbers guy,” quantify all your results). Anticipate his needs, by providing what you know he’ll want before he asks. Show him you understand the issues he faces and you’re sure to make your mark.
- Provide solutions – not just problems. Everyone makes mistakes. So if something does go wrong, view it as an opportunity to set yourself apart from chronic excuse-makers. Own up to the problem and come to the table with potential solutions. Your boss will appreciate your ability to think for yourself and manage a difficult situation.
- Be positive. When you celebrate a departmental success, send a congratulatory e-mail to those involved and copy your boss. The gesture will draw attention to your success as well as your leadership skills. During more stressful times, strive to maintain a positive attitude. For every two complaints or suggested improvements, point out eight positive things.
- Take a calculated risk. A boss will notice a talented employee who demonstrates his desire for excellence by occasionally sticking his neck out. So when the time is right, volunteer for a difficult assignment or challenge the status quo to improve a work process. Your courage and enthusiasm will increase your visibility and earn the respect of your boss and co-workers alike.
